Both Yelena and John whirled around, before John sighed heavily. “You really need to stop doing that, Lily,” he said, vaguely irritated.

He hated being snuck up on.

Lily seemed to materialize out of the trees and greenery and foliage. “I’m sorry,” she replied, though her little smile seemed to indicate otherwise. He could feel Yelena tense at his side and imagined it must be practically an insult to sneak up on her. “It is...very tempting, when you have the ability. But I overheard your conversation. Who are these people?”

“Necromancers,” he replied. “They’re doing something with the animals. I’d...rather spare you the specifics. It’s ugly.”

A look of sadness passed across her beautiful features. “I imagine it is,” she murmured. “You know where this cabin in question is, then?”

“Yes.”

“You are willing to pursue this situation? Technically speaking, our arrangement was for you to clear the corruption in the cave...”

“I’m willing to pursue this. This is an abomination. Yelena?”

“I will pursue this to its end,” she replied firmly.

“Thank you so much,” Lily said, genuine gratitude in her voice. “We dryad number so few in this forest. We could, probably, handle the situation, but we are particularly vulnerable to death magic and necromancers.”

“We’ll handle it, Lily.”

“I really appreciate it. I’ll try to stay within a decent range of you. I can track the pair of you well enough, especially with that crystal, but I’m afraid I have several things that need tending to that really can’t wait.”

“It’s okay. We’ll take care of this, Lily. This isn’t right.”

She thanked them again and gave John a kiss, though she shot a quick look at Yelena and suddenly seemed uncomfortable.

Yelena just smiled at her.

Then Lily left quickly.

“Let us go,” Yelena said.

He hesitated, then began walking towards where he thought the cabin in question was. At least she wasn’t angry anymore.
